This chapter outlines the commonalities and distinctions between Islamic and American law regarding marriage, divorce, financial support, and child custody. The author stresses the need to have improved education for Muslim women regarding their Islamic and legal rights, for Muslim community and religious leaders so they can better assist women, and for the American judiciary through diversity training to create greater awareness of Muslim sensibilities.
About the Author
Marwa Zeini is an attorney who practices law in Orlando, Florida. Marwa grew up in Saudi Arabia and Scotland and moved to the United States in 1992. She is married and has a seven year old daughter. Marwa graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering in 1996, and a master’s of Business Administration and Juris Doctorate in 2000. She is currently the owner of the Zeini Law Firm where she and her brother Abdullah practice family,
immigration, business, real estate, and estate and trust law.
