Domestic Violence Awareness Workshops for Muslim Leaders and Communities

PFP advocates for domestic violence awareness by facilitating workshops for Muslim leadership and communities across America. Surprisingly, rates of domestic violence in the Muslim community are at comparable levels to other faith groups in the United States. Our goal is for the Muslim leadership and community to recognize this reality and become catalysts for change from within.

Previous workshops have demonstrated that local community members grow in their understanding of family conflict and abuse, and their ability to be effectively engaged as Muslim leaders. Muslim communities benefit by the influx of new leaders who are knowledgeable about domestic violence and committed to positive change. They also gain as leaders increase their visibility as proponents of domestic violence advocacy and use their new insight to promote change, establish new and helpful civic relationships, and engage the community more fully. The workshop helps serve as a catalyst for new domestic violence initiatives and programs in each city. New organizations focusing on domestic violence are created in some cities while in others direct service groups are formed under the auspices of local mosques.

Workshops are conducted by PFP facilitators with extensive expertise in advocating against domestic violence in Muslim communities. Each workshop is customized to meet the needs of the local Muslim community, so advocates from various fields of social service expertise, Islamic scholars, local religious leaders, and legal experts may also present. We encourage inviting organizations to foster a collaborative approach by connecting with imams, masjid board and committee members, community leaders, attorneys, social service professionals, school teachers, domestic violence advocates, mental health providers, medical professionals, human rights activists, political activists, and youth leaders.

Workshop Objectives

  1. Raise awareness among the Muslim leadership and activists about domestic violence. Increase understanding of the Islamic stance on conflict resolution in marriage, divorce, and family relationships. Begin identifying acceptable and effective interventions. Cultural Sensitivity Trainings for Service Providers and Professionals Serving Muslim Clientele

Our Cultural Sensitivity Trainings cover the diversity of Muslims in the United States, their cultural practices, concepts of family structure, and their approach to gender issues. The training includes an overview of the Islamic sources of knowledge, the Islamic paradigm regarding family issues, the variations in Islamic practices among Muslims in America, and the differences between religion and culture. Participants will discover the ways in which culture and religion can create obstacles to service provision. They will also learn methods for engaging religion and culture as resources and strengths when assisting Muslim families who are experiencing conflict. Workshop objectives include understanding, identifying, and eradicating access barriers, dispelling popular myths, and understanding value differences across cultures to increase effective cross-cultural communication.
